Career Development

Are you burnt out?

By: Dale Simpson

As someone who has guided countless leaders through the crucible of demanding careers, I’ve seen firsthand how passion and purpose can quietly slip away, replaced by fatigue, cynicism, and doubt. Those who know me will tell you that my cynic often rears its head 😊.

Allow me to share some hard-won wisdom: burnout is not a badge of honour, nor does it diminish your accomplishments. It is, however, a signal—a subtle invitation to reflect, realign, and restore what truly matters. It’s a call to action.

Burnout doesn’t just happen overnight—it creeps in, often unnoticed until it impacts everything that matters. Senior professionals in high-stakes roles know this all too well. The constant drive for excellence, rapid decision-making, and never-ending demands come at a cost.

Burnout isn’t just about exhaustion. It chips away at mental well-being, clouds judgement, erodes creativity, and can leave even the most driven professionals questioning their sense of purpose. The schedules might be packed, but the passion wanes.

But here’s the truth—it’s possible to bounce back. You can rebuild resilience, rediscover your purpose, and create a career that fulfils you without draining the very life out of you. Here are some suggestions I give clients who may be experiencing burnout or want to stymie the beast before it takes hold.

• Pause and take stock. Are you heading for burnout or already there? Acknowledge burnout for what it is urgent signal that something needs to change. Self-awareness is your greatest ally coupled with self compassion.

• Reset boundaries. High performers often fall into the trap of saying “yes” to everything. Start saying “no” to the unnecessary to make space for the meaningful. There is no correlation between saying no and failing.

• Reconnect with your ‘why.’ Reflect on what drew you to your work in the first place. Is your purpose still the same? Aligning your daily efforts with your values can reignite passion. Going back through your story might help here.

• Create non-negotiable self-care routines. Resilience starts with small but consistent acts. Whether it’s exercise, mindfulness, or carving out time for hobbies, prioritising yourself fuels long-term performance.

• Seek support. Burnout thrives in isolation. Talk openly about your challenges—with a coach, mentor, or trusted friends. A fresh perspective can guide you towards sustainable solutions. Seeking help is a sign of strength.

And remember, you are not alone on this journey. Many will, at some point, stumble in the pursuit of achievement and legacy. The most seasoned professionals know that true strength lies in self awareness, and nurturing the passion that once set you on your path. Take heart: with intention and support, you can reclaim both your well-being and your sense of purpose.
